S. Korea aims to get its COVID-19 daily tally to below 500 within two weeks despite several cluster infections
정부 “환자 감소세…상황 유지시 1∼2주내 500명 아래도 가능”
Good evening. We begin with the Covid situation here in South Korea.
525 new coronavirus cases in this country today. The daily tally is definitely trending downward although not as quickly as we would all like to see, health authorities are determined to consolidate this trend and bring down the daily cases below 500.
But, of course, the battle against Covid is not an easy one. Cluster infections linked to a research hospital ward, department stores and foreign worker communities are keeping this battle all the more challenging.
Kim Sung-min leads our coverage tonight.
Keeping the country’s daily COVID-19 tally below the 600 mark for the second straight day,… South Korean health authorities are working to bring the figure down further.
“To have stable control of virus prevention efforts,… alleviate the nation’s anxiety and support the economic recovery,… the headquarters will put its full efforts into making sure the daily tally falls below 500.”
This comes after the country on Friday reported 5-hundred-25 new cases.
Local transmissions accounted for more than 500 cases… with only 16 coming from overseas.
The greater Seoul area remains a virus hotspot more than 63 percent of the local cases coming from the region.
Seoul alone reported 1-hundred-77 cases on Friday.
One of the clusters came from Chung-Ang University Hospital with at least 4 people confirmed to have the virus.
“After a caregiver tested positive on Wednesday from the hospital behind me,…a patient and their family members later tested positive on Friday. Another 1-hundred-20 people had to go through COVID-19 testing.”
However, the hospital did not have to shut down or halt operations as there have been no additional cases other than the original four.
In a cluster linked to the food hall of Shinsegae Department Store in Seoul’s Seocho-gu District,… a total of 6 people, including one customer, have now been confirmed to have the virus.
This comes after one of the cashiers was confirmed positive on Monday.
And another cluster linked to the Lotte Department Store’s main branch in Jung-gu District added three more cases,…bringing the total to 15.
The department store has shut down its food court since Monday and closed the whole main branch facility for a day on Thursday.
As some of the 3-thousand-700 people who went through testing are still waiting for their results,… health authorities are remaining vigilant over the possibility of additional cases.
Despite the sporadic clusters,… the health authorities are confident in achieving their goal of forming herd immunity by November and seeing the effect of the vaccines soon.
